Check the fuel and oil levels
Make sure the spark plug wire is connected
Set the mower on a flat, open surface
Engage the safety handle or bail bar
Set the throttle to start or choke if needed
Prime the engine if your mower has a primer bulb
Pull the starter cord firmly if it is a pull-start mower
Turn the ignition key or press the start button if it is an electric-start mower
Release the choke gradually after the engine starts
Let the engine warm up briefly before mowing
