Wash the potato
Peel the potato if desired
Cut the potato into even pieces if needed
Place the potato in a pot
Add cold water to cover the potato
Add salt if desired
Bring the water to a boil
Reduce to a simmer
Cook until the potato is tender
Drain the water
Serve or use as needed
