Clean the micrometer and the object to be measured
Check that the micrometer is zeroed before use
Open the spindle using the thimble or ratchet
Place the object between the anvil and spindle
Turn the thimble until the spindle contacts the object
Use the ratchet stop for consistent measuring pressure
Lock the spindle if the micrometer has a lock
Read the sleeve scale first
Read the thimble scale next
Add both readings together
Record the measurement
Release the object and open the micrometer
Repeat the measurement if needed for accuracy
