Remove any damaged outer leaves from the cabbage
Rinse the cabbage under cold water
Cut the cabbage into halves or quarters
Remove the core
Slice or chop the cabbage into pieces
Heat a pot or skillet over medium heat
Add butter, oil, or other cooking fat
Add the cabbage to the pot or skillet
Add salt and any desired seasonings
Stir the cabbage to coat it evenly
Cook until it begins to soften
Add a small amount of water if needed
Cover and cook until tender
Stir occasionally while cooking
Remove from heat when the cabbage reaches the desired texture
Serve hot
