Observe for neurologic signs, sudden behavior changes, aggression, paralysis, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained death
Quarantine and isolate the animal immediately if rabies is suspected
Contact a veterinarian, local animal control, or public health authority right away
Do not attempt to test live animals for rabies at home
For live animals, follow official quarantine or observation protocols as directed by authorities
For dead animals, submit the head or brain tissue to an approved diagnostic laboratory
Use direct fluorescent antibody testing on brain tissue as the standard diagnostic test
Collect samples from the brainstem, cerebellum, and hippocampus by trained personnel
Wear appropriate personal protective equipment when handling suspected rabid animals
Follow strict biosecurity and specimen transport procedures
Report confirmed or suspected cases to the appropriate public health or veterinary authority
