How to Dispute a Collection?

Get a copy of your credit reports from all three bureaus

Identify the collection account and note the collector’s name, account number, and dates

Check whether the debt is accurate, yours, and still within the statute of limitations

Gather supporting documents such as statements, payment records, settlement letters, or identity theft reports

Send a written dispute to the collection agency by certified mail with return receipt

Clearly state which account you are disputing and why

Request validation of the debt and copies of supporting records

Dispute the collection with each credit bureau reporting it

Include copies of supporting documents, not originals

Keep copies of every letter, form, and receipt you send or receive

Follow up if the collector or credit bureau does not respond within the required time

If the debt is not verified or is inaccurate, request removal or correction in writing

Consider filing a complaint with the CFPB, FTC, or your state attorney general if the issue is not resolved

Consult a consumer law attorney if the debt is large, disputed, or involves possible legal action
