How to Do Chemical Equations?

Write the correct chemical formulas for all reactants and products

Separate reactants and products with an arrow

Count the number of atoms of each element on both sides

Add coefficients to balance the atoms

Do not change subscripts in formulas

Recount atoms after each change

Balance one element at a time

Leave hydrogen and oxygen for last if possible

Reduce coefficients to the smallest whole-number ratio

Check that the final equation is balanced on both sides
