Wash the area with warm water and mild soap
Soften the tar with mineral oil, baby oil, petroleum jelly, or cooking oil
Gently rub the tar with a soft cloth or cotton pad
Repeat applying oil and wiping until the tar loosens
Wash the skin again with soap and water
Use a gentle exfoliating washcloth if needed
Avoid using harsh solvents like gasoline, paint thinner, or acetone
Do not scrub hard or pick at the skin
Seek medical help if the tar covers a large area, causes burns, or will not come off
