Separate a garlic clove from the bulb
Peel off the papery skin
Trim the root end if needed
Place the clove on a cutting board
Smash the clove lightly with the flat side of a knife if you want easier peeling
Slice the clove lengthwise for larger pieces
Chop crosswise for smaller pieces
Mince by making several fine cuts in different directions
Sprinkle a little salt on the garlic to help keep it in place while cutting
Keep fingertips tucked away from the blade
Use a sharp knife for cleaner cuts
