Wash your hands and the area around the splinter with soap and water
Clean a pair of tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
If the splinter is shallow, use the tweezers to gently pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is covered by skin, sterilize the needle and gently lift the skin over the tip
Use the tweezers to grasp the exposed end and remove the splinter
If needed, use clear tape to try to lift out very small splinters
Soak the area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes if the splinter is hard to remove
Wash the area again after removal
Apply antibiotic ointment if available
Cover the area with a clean bandage
Seek medical help if the splinter is deep, near the eye, under a fingernail, or cannot be removed easily
Seek medical help if there is redness, swelling, pus, or worsening pain
