Install a transfer switch or interlock kit rated for your electrical panel
Have a licensed electrician install and verify the connection if you are not qualified
Turn off the main breaker before any generator connection
Move the generator outdoors and place it away from doors, windows, and vents
Use a properly rated generator inlet box and outdoor power inlet cord
Connect the generator to the inlet box with the correct heavy-duty cord
Start the generator and let it stabilize
Switch the transfer switch or interlock to generator power
Turn on only the essential circuits one at a time
Monitor generator load to avoid overloading
To return to utility power, turn off connected loads
Switch the transfer switch or interlock back to utility power
Turn off the generator and disconnect the cord
Never backfeed power through a wall outlet or dryer outlet
Never run a generator indoors, in a garage, or in an enclosed space
