Wash your hands often and avoid touching or rubbing your eyes
Stop wearing contact lenses until the infection is fully gone
Throw away or replace eye makeup, contact lens cases, and any contaminated eye products
Use warm or cool compresses on the closed eye for comfort
Clean any discharge from the eyelids with a clean, damp cloth or sterile saline
Use artificial tears to help relieve irritation
Avoid sharing towels, pillows, washcloths, or eye drops
Stay home from work, school, or daycare if the eye is very red, draining, or contagious
If it is allergic pink eye, avoid the trigger and use allergy medicine or antihistamine eye drops
If it is bacterial pink eye, see a doctor for prescription antibiotic eye drops or ointment
If it is viral pink eye, rest and let it run its course while preventing spread
Get urgent medical care if you have eye pain, vision changes, light sensitivity, severe swelling, or symptoms that worsen
