Install the correct mod loader for your Minecraft version
Download the mod file for the same Minecraft version
Open the Minecraft launcher and run the modded profile once
Locate the Minecraft mods folder
Move or copy the mod file into the mods folder
Launch Minecraft using the modded profile
Check that the mod appears and works in-game
