Gather the rekeying kit, original key, new key, screwdriver, and plug follower
Remove the lock from the door if needed
Take off the lock cylinder or knob assembly
Insert the original key and turn it slightly
Remove the retaining clip or plug cap
Use the plug follower to push the cylinder plug out of the housing
Remove the old key pins and springs
Insert the new key into the plug
Install the new key pins to match the new key
Reassemble the springs and plug components
Reinsert the plug into the cylinder housing
Reinstall the retaining clip or cap
Test the lock with the new key
Reinstall the lock on the door
Check that the lock turns smoothly and secures properly
