Let the cake cool completely
Level the cake layers if needed
Place one layer on a serving plate or cake board
Add a layer of frosting on top
Spread the frosting evenly
Add the next cake layer and repeat if needed
Apply a thin crumb coat over the entire cake
Chill the cake until the crumb coat sets
Add a thicker final layer of frosting
Smooth the sides and top with an offset spatula or bench scraper
Decorate as desired
