Identify the number you want the square root of
If it is a perfect square, find the number that multiplies by itself to make it
If using a calculator, press the square root button and enter the number
If estimating, find the nearest perfect squares above and below the number
Choose the value between those square roots
If doing long division square root method, group digits in pairs from right to left
Find the largest square less than or equal to the leftmost group
Write that number as the first digit of the root
Subtract its square from the first group
Bring down the next pair of digits
Double the current root
Find the largest digit that makes the new divisor fit
Repeat the subtract, bring down, and choose digit steps until finished
Check your answer by multiplying the result by itself
