How To Administer Tablets To Cats?

Confirm the medication is specifically for cats and the correct dose is prescribed

Use the correct tablet type and strength; do not split or crush unless the label or veterinarian instructs it

Gather supplies: tablet, treats (if permitted), water, gloves (optional), and a towel or blanket

Choose an approach: pill pocket or treat method, or direct tablet administration

If using a pill pocket or treat: place the tablet inside, offer the treat fully, and watch the cat swallow

If direct administration: wrap the cat in a towel or use a gentle “scruff” hold to limit movement

Hold the cat’s head steady and tilt it slightly back

Use your dominant hand to gently open the mouth by applying pressure at the corners of the jaw

Place the tablet as far back on the tongue as possible without forcing it

Close the mouth and keep it closed briefly while you gently stroke the throat to encourage swallowing

Release the cat and offer a small amount of water or a treat only if your veterinarian allows

Check that the tablet was swallowed (watch for chewing and swallowing; avoid letting the cat spit it out)

If the cat resists or spits: stay calm, wait briefly, and try again with a fresh tablet only if instructed by the veterinarian

Do not mix medication into food or water unless specifically approved by the veterinarian

Store tablets as directed and keep them out of reach of other pets and children

Contact a veterinarian immediately if the cat vomits the tablet right after dosing, shows breathing trouble, excessive drooling, choking, or severe lethargy

Follow the dosing schedule exactly and keep a record of each dose given
