Wash the car thoroughly and dry completely
Park in the shade and let the paint cool
Inspect the scratch to confirm whether it’s clear-coat only, paint, or down to bare metal
Use masking tape to protect unaffected areas around the scratch
For clear-coat scratches (no visible gouge): apply rubbing compound lightly with a microfiber applicator in straight passes
Work a small section at a time, using minimal pressure
Wipe residue with a clean microfiber towel
Apply a fine polishing compound to refine the finish if needed
For deeper scratches that show paint damage: use a scratch repair kit or touch-up method appropriate for your paint type
Apply touch-up paint in thin layers, letting each layer dry per product directions
If the scratch is gouged: level with progressively finer sandpaper only if the kit recommends it (start with 2000–3000 grit for paint leveling, then polish)
Wet sand carefully with light pressure, keeping the surface lubricated
After leveling, polish the area to blend
Apply rubbing compound only if required, then follow with polish
Finish with a wax or paint sealant to protect the repaired area
Remove tape and inspect under bright light from multiple angles
If the scratch remains visible, repeat with the next-finer step (compound/polish) rather than adding more aggressive material
