Choose the measurement method: manual pulse count or heart-rate monitor.
Manual method (radial pulse): place two fingers on the wrist (thumb side), count beats for 30 seconds, then multiply by 2.
Manual method (carotid pulse): place two fingers on the side of the neck, count beats for 30 seconds, then multiply by 2.
Manual method (full minute): count beats for 60 seconds if accuracy is needed, use the count as beats per minute (bpm).
Use a heart-rate monitor (chest strap or wrist device): read the displayed bpm directly.
If measuring during exercise, start timing after a few seconds to get a steady rate, then record bpm at the desired interval.
If using intervals (e.g., 15 seconds), multiply by 4 to estimate bpm.
If the pulse is irregular, take multiple readings and average them.
Record bpm and the conditions (resting, during activity, time of measurement).
