Subtract preferred equity if you want book value available to common shareholders
Find the number of common shares outstanding
Divide common shareholders’ equity by common shares outstanding
Use this formula: Book Value Per Share = (Total Equity – Preferred Equity) / Common Shares Outstanding
If there is no preferred stock, use: Book Value Per Share = Total Shareholders’ Equity / Common Shares Outstanding
