Add a layer of sand or stone dust

Place the patio stones in the desired pattern
Keep joints consistent between stones
Cut stones as needed to fit edges
Check each stone for level as you go
Tap stones into place with a rubber mallet
Fill the joints with sand or polymeric sand
Sweep excess sand off the surface
Compact the patio again if needed
Add edging to hold the stones in place
Water the joints if using polymeric sand
Clean the finished patio surface
