Apply a cold compress for 10–15 minutes at a time
Keep the eye clean and avoid rubbing it
Remove contact lenses and avoid eye makeup
Use artificial tears if the eye feels irritated
Take an over-the-counter antihistamine if allergies are the cause
Sleep with your head elevated
Gently wash the eyelid with warm water if crusting is present
Use a warm compress if the swelling is from a stye or blocked gland
Do not squeeze or pop any bump on the eyelid
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, vision changes, fever, pus, injury, or swelling that worsens or does not improve
