Ensure the handgun is unloaded
Remove the magazine
Open the action and visually and physically check the chamber
Point the handgun in a safe direction
Gather cleaning supplies
Field strip the handgun according to the manufacturer’s manual
Clean the barrel with a solvent and cleaning brush
Run clean patches through the barrel until they come out clean
Clean the slide, frame, and other accessible parts with solvent and cloth or brush
Clean the feed ramp and chamber area
Wipe away residue and old lubricant
Lightly lubricate the recommended contact points
Reassemble the handgun
Function check the handgun
Wipe down the exterior
Store the handgun unloaded and secured
