If it is a hardwired or building-installed fire detector, contact a licensed electrician or the property manager
If it is part of a monitored fire alarm system, contact the alarm company or building maintenance
If it is a battery-powered detector you own, remove the battery
If it is a plug-in detector, unplug it from the outlet
If it has a tamper-resistant or sealed power source, do not force it open
If you need it temporarily disabled for maintenance, follow the manufacturer’s instructions
Restore power and reinstall the detector as soon as the maintenance is complete
Test the detector after reconnecting it
Replace the detector if it is damaged or malfunctioning
