Find the element’s symbol or name on the periodic table
Locate the number at the top of the element’s box
Use that number as the atomic number
Remember that the atomic number equals the number of protons in the atom
If given the number of protons, that number is the atomic number
If given the element’s identity, match it to the periodic table to get its atomic number
