Apply a warm compress for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times daily
Keep the area clean and dry
Stop shaving, waxing, or plucking the area until it heals
Do not squeeze, pick, or pop it
Gently exfoliate the surrounding skin if it is not irritated
Use an over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid product if appropriate
Wear loose, breathable clothing to reduce friction
Use a clean, sharp razor and shave in the direction of hair growth once healed
Consider an antiseptic wash if the area is mildly inflamed
Seek medical care if it is very painful, enlarging, draining pus, or not improving
Seek urgent care if you have fever, spreading redness, or severe swelling
See a dermatologist for recurrent or persistent ingrown hair cysts
Have a clinician drain or remove it if needed
