Prepare the pill, a towel, and a small treat
Wash your hands
Keep the cat calm and secure
Wrap the cat in a towel if needed, leaving the head exposed
Hold the cat gently but firmly
Tilt the cat’s head slightly upward
Open the cat’s mouth by placing fingers at the corners of the jaw
Place the pill as far back on the tongue as possible
Close the cat’s mouth
Hold the mouth closed briefly
Gently stroke the throat or blow lightly on the nose to encourage swallowing
Check that the pill was swallowed
Offer a small treat or water if allowed by your veterinarian
Use a pill pocket, pill gun, or ask your veterinarian about liquid or compounded medication if needed
