How to Back a Trailer?

Adjust mirrors so you can see the trailer and surrounding area

Check that the hitch, coupler, and safety chains are secure

Put the tow vehicle in reverse

Place one hand at the bottom of the steering wheel

Turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the trailer to go

Back up slowly

Make small steering corrections

Stop and pull forward to straighten if the trailer gets too far off line

Use a spotter if available

Keep the trailer and tow vehicle aligned as much as possible

Watch both mirrors continuously

Avoid sharp turns while backing

Brake gently and make gradual movements

Practice in an open area before backing in tight spaces
