Meet the minimum age requirement

Apply for entry-level railroad positions
Complete railroad training and classroom instruction
Learn railroad rules, signals, and operating procedures
Gain experience as a conductor or in another rail role
Pass required certification or licensing exams
Complete on-the-job training under supervision
Demonstrate strong attention to safety and detail
Build knowledge of train systems, routes, and equipment
Stay current with company and federal regulations
Advance to locomotive engineer when qualified
