How To Become An Anesthesiologist?

Earn a bachelor’s degree (typically in biology, chemistry, physics, or a related field)

Complete required pre-med coursework (e.g., biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics, math, and English)

Take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

Apply to and complete medical school (MD or DO)

Complete United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2 CK (MD) or COMLEX-USA (DO)

Match into an anesthesiology residency through the NRMP (typically 4 years)

Complete residency training in anesthesiology (including rotations in critical care, pain management, and related areas as required)

Pass the anesthesiology board certification exams (e.g., American Board of Anesthesiology/ABOA or American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology/AOBA)

Maintain certification through ongoing requirements (e.g., continuing medical education and periodic re-certification as applicable)

Consider additional fellowships if desired (e.g., pediatric anesthesia, cardiac anesthesia, regional anesthesia, critical care, pain medicine)

Obtain state medical licensure and hospital credentialing

Build experience through additional training, research, and mentorship (as desired)
