How To Bleach Hair?

Do a patch test 48 hours before bleaching

Do a strand test to check timing and results

Gather supplies: bleach powder, developer, toner (optional), shampoo, conditioner, gloves, bowl, tint brush, clips, petroleum jelly (optional), timer

Use non-metal tools and a non-metal bowl

Protect skin: apply petroleum jelly around hairline and ears (optional)

Wear gloves and mix bleach powder with developer per product instructions (typically 1:1, but follow label)

Apply bleach to dry, unwashed hair unless your product label says otherwise

Start application on the back/sides first, then the top, then the front

Work quickly and evenly, saturating hair from roots to ends or using your chosen method

Avoid overlapping already-bleached sections for too long

Check progress every 5–10 minutes

Stop when hair reaches pale yellow level for toner (or desired level for your goal)

Rinse thoroughly with cool or lukewarm water

Shampoo gently to remove all bleach

Apply conditioner or a bond-supporting treatment

Tone if needed: mix toner with developer per label and apply to damp hair for the recommended time

Rinse, then shampoo gently again

Apply a deep conditioner or bond treatment after toning

Avoid heat styling and harsh products for 24–48 hours

Do not bleach again until hair is strong enough; wait at least 1–2 weeks or follow product/hairstylist guidance

If hair feels overly elastic, gummy, or breaks easily, stop and seek professional help
