Take the dog outside frequently, especially after waking, eating, drinking, playing, and before bed
Use the same outdoor potty spot every time
Reward immediately with praise and a treat after the dog pees outside
Supervise the dog closely indoors
Use a crate or small confined area when you cannot watch the dog
Keep a consistent feeding and potty schedule
Clean indoor accidents with an enzymatic cleaner
Do not punish the dog after accidents
Interrupt accidents calmly if caught in the act and take the dog outside
Limit water right before bedtime if appropriate and approved by a vet
Watch for signs the dog needs to go out, such as circling, sniffing, whining, or pacing
Make sure the dog has enough potty breaks for its age and size
Rule out medical causes with a veterinarian if accidents continue
Avoid giving the dog free access to the whole house too soon
Gradually increase freedom only after consistent success outdoors
