Find the mean of the data set
Subtract the mean from each value
Record the difference for each value
Use the absolute value of each difference if calculating mean absolute deviation
Square each difference if calculating variance or standard deviation
Add the squared differences
Divide by the number of values for population variance
Divide by one less than the number of values for sample variance
Take the square root of the variance to get standard deviation
Use the resulting value as the deviation measure
