How To Calculate Empirical Formula?

Determine the mass or percentage of each element in the compound

If given percentages, assume a 100 g sample so each percentage becomes grams

Convert each element’s mass to moles by dividing by its atomic mass

Divide all mole values by the smallest mole value

If needed, multiply all ratios by the same whole number to get whole numbers

Write the empirical formula using the whole-number mole ratio as subscripts
