Keep them in a cool aquarium, ideally 60–68°F
Use a fully cycled tank with a filter and stable water parameters
Maintain ammonia at 0 ppm
Maintain nitrite at 0 ppm
Keep nitrate low, preferably under 20 ppm
Use dechlorinated water only
Provide at least 20 gallons for one axolotl
Add more space for each additional axolotl
Use a soft substrate or bare bottom
Avoid gravel and small stones
Provide hiding places and low-light cover
Keep tank decor smooth and safe
Feed earthworms, axolotl pellets, or suitable frozen foods
Feed juveniles daily
Feed adults every 2–3 days
Remove uneaten food promptly
Handle as little as possible
Use wet, clean hands or a soft net only if necessary
Keep them away from strong light
Avoid warm water and sudden temperature changes
Perform regular partial water changes
Test water frequently
Quarantine new tankmates or avoid tankmates entirely
Watch for signs of stress, illness, or injury
Consult an exotic animal veterinarian if needed
