Check the expiration or best-by date
Place the egg in a bowl of water
If it sinks and lies flat, it is fresh
If it sinks but stands upright, it is older but may still be usable
If it floats, discard it
Crack the egg into a separate bowl
If the white is clear and the yolk is firm, it is good
If it has a bad smell, discard it
If the white is pink, green, or cloudy, discard it
If the shell is cracked, slimy, or powdery, discard it
