Rinse the crawfish under cold running water
Sort out any dead or damaged crawfish
Place the crawfish in a large container or sink
Cover with cold water
Add salt if desired
Let them soak briefly
Stir gently to loosen dirt and debris
Drain the dirty water
Repeat rinsing and soaking until the water runs clear
Rinse one final time under cold water
Drain well before cooking
