Verify the firearm is unloaded
Remove the magazine
Open the action and visually and physically inspect the chamber
Separate the upper and lower receivers
Remove the bolt carrier group
Remove the charging handle
Clean the bore with a solvent-soaked patch
Run a bore brush through the barrel
Run clean patches through the barrel until they come out clean
Clean the chamber with a chamber brush
Clean the bolt carrier group with solvent and a brush
Clean the bolt, bolt tail, firing pin, cam pin, and extractor
Wipe carbon and fouling from the upper receiver
Wipe the lower receiver and fire control area
Clean the charging handle
Dry all parts thoroughly
Apply a light coat of lubricant to the bolt carrier group and moving parts
Reassemble the rifle
Perform a function check
Wipe down the exterior metal surfaces with a lightly oiled cloth
