Scrub off loose rust with steel wool, a scrub pad, or a stiff brush
Wash the skillet with hot water and a small amount of mild dish soap
Rinse thoroughly and dry immediately with a towel
Remove remaining rust with a paste of coarse salt and a little water, or soak briefly in vinegar and water
Scrub again until the rust is gone
Rinse and dry completely
Heat the skillet on the stove or in the oven to remove all moisture
Apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the entire skillet
Wipe off any excess oil
Bake the skillet upside down in the oven at 450 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit for about one hour
Let it cool in the oven
Repeat oiling and baking if needed to restore the seasoning
Store in a dry place
Wipe with a light coat of oil after each use
