Clarify the goal and scope

Gather the items or data to be organized

Sort them into related groups

Draw the outline of the head and neck

Sketch the nose and mouth

Draw the nasal cavity inside the nose

Draw a small oval, rod, or spiral shape

Add a slightly uneven outline

Draw a few short lines or spikes around the edge

Identify the root of the cladogram

Read from the root toward the branches

Find the branching points, called nodes

Choose the organisms or taxa to compare

Select shared characteristics

Determine which characteristics are ancestral and which are derived
