Open the Terminal app
Type `touch filename.txt`
Press Return
Find the file in Finder
Open TextEdit
Create a new document
Go to Format
Select Make Plain Text
Type your text
Go to File
Select Save
Enter a filename with `.txt`
Click Save
In Finder, right-click in a folder
Select New Folder if needed
Open the folder
Use TextEdit to save a new `.txt` file there
