Gather an iron nail or bolt
Wrap insulated copper wire tightly around the nail
Leave both wire ends free
Strip the insulation from the wire ends
Connect the wire ends to a battery
Use tape or clips to keep the connection secure
Test the electromagnet by bringing it near small metal objects
Disconnect the battery when finished
