Rest the ankle and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Compress the ankle with an elastic bandage or wrap
Elevate the ankle above heart level when possible
Use over-the-counter pain relievers if appropriate
Avoid putting weight on the ankle if it is very painful
Wear a brace or supportive wrap if needed
Begin gentle range-of-motion exercises once pain and swelling improve
Gradually return to normal activity as strength and balance return
Seek medical care if there is severe pain, major swelling, inability to walk, deformity, or symptoms that do not improve
