Wash your hands and gently clean the blister with mild soap and water
Pat the area completely dry
Do not pop an intact blister
Apply a hydrocolloid blister bandage or a sterile nonstick dressing
If the blister is large or painful, use a padded moleskin ring around it to reduce pressure
Keep the foot elevated while resting
Avoid walking or wear loose, cushioned footwear
If the blister has already opened, leave the skin flap in place if possible
Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment only if the blister is open and the skin is broken
Cover the open blister with a nonstick sterile bandage
Change the dressing if it becomes wet or dirty
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if needed and if safe for you
Keep the area dry overnight
Seek medical care if there is spreading redness, pus, fever, severe pain, or if you have diabetes or poor circulation
