Check local laws, permits, and property boundaries
Inspect the tree for lean, rot, dead limbs, power lines, and obstacles
Plan the fall direction and clear two escape paths
Wear protective gear: helmet, eye protection, hearing protection, gloves, boots, chainsaw chaps
Gather tools: chainsaw, wedges, axe, rope, fuel, first-aid kit
Clear the area of people, pets, and objects
Cut away low branches and brush
Make a notch cut on the side facing the intended fall direction
Make the back cut on the opposite side, above the notch
Insert wedges if needed to prevent pinching and guide the fall
Move away along the escape path as the tree begins to fall
Wait until the tree is fully down and stable before approaching
Limb the fallen tree from the base toward the top
Cut the trunk into manageable sections
Stop and call a professional if the tree is large, damaged, near structures, or near power lines
