Place used needles, syringes, and lancets in a FDA-cleared sharps container if available
If no sharps container is available, use a heavy-duty plastic container with a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid
Do not recap, bend, break, or clip needles
Keep the container closed and out of reach of children and pets
When the container is about three-quarters full, seal it securely
Label the container “SHARPS” if possible
Do not put loose needles in the trash or recycling
Use NYC Department of Sanitation safe disposal options for household sharps
Check NYC Health or NYC311 for current drop-off locations and collection events
Ask your pharmacy, doctor, or hospital if they accept sharps for disposal
