Open your Google Docs document
Click Tools in the top menu
Select Word count
View the word count in the pop-up window
Use the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+C on Windows or Cmd+Shift+C on Mac
Check the box for Display word count while typing if you want it shown continuously
Close the word count window when finished
