Identify the plant type and growth stage
Measure the growing area or pot size
Use less than the maximum dose for young or sensitive plants
Apply fertilizer only to moist soil unless the label says otherwise
Follow the recommended frequency on the label
Dilute liquid fertilizer to the stated strength
Spread granular fertilizer evenly around the root zone
Keep fertilizer away from stems and leaves
Water after applying fertilizer if required
Reduce dosing during dormancy or slow growth
Increase only if the plant shows clear nutrient deficiency and the label allows it
Avoid overfertilizing
Recheck the label each time you use a new product
