Use saline nose drops or spray
Use a bulb syringe or nasal aspirator after saline
Run a cool-mist humidifier in the room
Keep the child well hydrated with water, milk, or fluids
Offer warm liquids if the child will drink them
Keep the child upright when awake
Wipe the nose gently with soft tissues
Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the nostrils if skin is irritated
Use steam from a warm bathroom for a short time
Avoid smoke, strong odors, and dust
Make sure the child gets plenty of rest
Use fever or pain medicine only if approved by a pediatrician
Call a pediatrician if symptoms last more than 10 to 14 days
Call a pediatrician sooner if there is trouble breathing, high fever, ear pain, dehydration, or worsening symptoms
