Gather a clean container
Collect a filter material such as cloth, paper towel, coffee filter, sand, gravel, or activated carbon
Place the filter material over or inside a funnel
Pour the water slowly through the filter
Collect the filtered water in the container below
Repeat the filtration if needed
Boil or disinfect the water before drinking if it is not already safe
